This collection contains digital surrogates of audiocassettes and open reel tapes, that belonged to the trumpeter, composer, and bandleader John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie. Recordings include rehearsal tapes, concert tapes, and radio interviews with Gillespie. The resources in this collection draw their titles from the hand written labels on the original media. The recordings are part of a larger collection of manuscripts, audiovisual materials, and realia purchased through the NMAAM-Vanderbilt Collections Initiative which seeks to expand the representation of African American individuals and communities in archival collections and to document the history and practice of African American and African diaspora musicians in the United States. The finding aid for the John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie Collection is available here.
